Cold Laser Therapy

Cold Laser Therapy Works!

As chiropractors, traditionally we are trained to detect and correct misalignments of the spine and joints in order to strengthen and help heal the neuro and musculoskeletal networks of the body affected by injury or disease. Through the shifting of bones, ligaments and muscles to their natural positions, the body can heal itself more efficiently. Evidence-based research supported by many years of clinical experience shows that spinal manipulation can treat many symptoms and help heal injuries faster. Many of these approaches are being integrated in chiropractic care. One approach that is used in line with other proven treatments is cold laser therapy.

What is Cold Laser Therapy

Cold laser therapy refers to Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) technology. It is a scientifically proven method of reducing pain, inflammation, and swelling while also accelerating the healing process of the damaged tissue. Cold laser therapy magnifies energy found in the invisible spectrum of light. The healing laser gives these photons of light the capability to reach tissues up to two inches below the surface of the skin. The process delivers energy and healing light to the damaged cells resulting in a much more accelerated process of repair and healing.

How Cold Laser Therapy Works

The cold laser is emitted by a hand held device that our chiropractor will use and is usually about the size of a flashlight. The laser is directly placed over the affected part for at least thirty seconds to several minutes, depending on the area being treated and the dose provided by the cold laser unit. At this time, the non-thermal photons of light that are emitted pass through the different layers of the skin (epidermis, dermis and subcutaneous tissue). The process can be compared to photosynthesis in plants wherein the sunlight is absorbed by plants and is converted to energy to sustain the growth of the plant. Once the cell absorbs the therapeutic light energy, it then begins a series of events in the cells that ultimately leads to the healing or damaged or injured tissue. In this case, the results include reduction of pain, swelling and inflammation including overall reduction in healing time through increased metabolism in the cells.

What to Expect During Your Cold Laser Therapy

Our East Bank Wellness chiropractor will determine the areas that are causing the symptoms you feel. Once that is determined we’ll go over the procedure with you so that you know and understand what is going to happen. Once treatment begins we’ll apply the laser device on the affected areas. You will feel the device touch your skin but you will not feel any pain, heat or discomfort all throughout the cold laser therapy process. Some patients do report a slight tingly sensation due mostly to the increased blood flow that occurs to the area being treated. The laser creates no heat, there is no burning sensation or warmth from the device that you will feel. Low level lasers such as this one are known as cold lasers or soft lasers. The treatment session typically only for a few minutes but you will need to return for subsequent sessions usually several each week, for about a month until we achieve the full benefits of the therapy.

Since cold laser therapy is a non-invasive procedure, there is no need for body prep in advance. There is no recovery time and no adverse effects. You can go back to your normal daily routine immediately. However, it is important that you take extra care of the treated area in order not to negate the therapeutic effects already in place.

The therapeutic effects of cold laser therapy start at the time of treatment and become noticeable several hours after the procedure. Many patients experience pain relief and increased range of motion immediately. If your condition is severe or chronic in nature, it may require several treatment sessions in order to enjoy the full benefits of cold laser therapy.

Cold Laser Therapy is Safe

Since the use of a laser is involved, you might think that this has the potential of harm, however it’s completely safe. There are hundreds of clinical trials and scientific articles about cold laser therapy that have documented the effectiveness and safety of this type of treatment. The FDA has approved the laser device for use in the United States. Rest assured, it is safe for you.
